So I heard, possibly incorrectly, that the Superbowl is expected to have a crowd attendance of 80,000.... Seems kinda low considering the USAs population doesn't it? I mean, for the 2013 AFL Grand Final we had an attendance of over 100,000 an our population is significantly less than yours (24 million at last count I believe) heck even the Ashes Cricket series had attendance of over 90,000 on some days (Ashes series is always disputed between Australia/England, 5 "Tests" with each test being played over 5 days)

The stadium only holds 82,000

It might have something to do with stadium size more than anything else. I sure if they could jam another 200,000 people in there safely they'd sure as hell be doing so.

Stadium size.

Make no mistake, the Superbowl is the single largest viewed sporting event around. It owns...well, everything.

MetLife Stadium capacity is 82,566. It will be as full as allowed by law

I think that's all the stadium holds. Most NFL stadiums are 70-100k. Yes, very few people get to go, but everyone watches. It may as well be a national holiday, I mean it pretty much is. "Super Bowl Sunday" is a big deal like New Years Eve. Everyone has parties or goes to parties, giant meals are prepared, drinks are shared. It's really the one TV event that binds us together as a nation. EVERYONE watches. If not for the game, for the hype, for the hilarious ad campaigns, for the extravagant halftime show, or just so that they're not the only one that didn't watch it and misses out on the conversations all day on Monday.

Basically this.

You plan your Sundays around this event. It probably rivals every true national holiday at this point.

I'm not even MERRRICAAAAN. I'm still going over and having greasy food and shamelessly bandwagoning a team for the sake of having a good time.

The World Cup, Ashes and Olympics WISH they had this kind of commercial appeal to the entire world.

Hi. *NFL commissioner here. The overall stadium attendance is not as significant as $ to Human ratio (refered to as DtH here in the office).

See, everyone and their daughter's drug dealing bisexual boyfriend wants to go to the Super Bowl. Even with draconian, anti-football culture transportation rules in place. Even as we use the (valid in any other context) 'security' excuse to jack up the cost of bussing to the stadium by ~2500%. People still want to go, really bad. So, if we choose a much smaller venue than usual, we can limit the supply of seats, and charge inflaticulously exorbitant prices for the remaining supply .

Actually, 'exorbitant' doesn't really work as a word to describe this, even with a made-up adjective to help. No, this is like people volunteering themselves for anal without lube. For a whole day. Gross, yes, but I can't really think of any other analogy that accurately enough describes this. It's amazing. I'm so glad bearing witness to (and profiting from) this mess every year is part of my job. It's awesome. Hope that answers any other questions you might have. Perhaps we can expect to see you at next year's super bowl? ;)

*(Like, in a 'I play one on TV' sorta way. Not in real life.)

I guess at least a small amount of people are starting to get FED UP with the NFL's stupid shit.

Also, someone else on here said that they weren't even allowed to use the full capacity of the stadium for the super bowl.

It's not the stadium size, its the playing field size.

An NFL field is 17556 square meters.

An AFL field is 22560 square meters.

Now if you don't care about the stadium size vs the field size, you'd need to hold the Super Bowl at in North Korea, at the Rungrado May Day Stadium. That sucker will hold over 150,000 people.

Not really. A 1 hour game that takes 4 hours because of commercial bullshit? And I think you'll find that more people are interested in cricket, given that just India and Bangladesh combined have four times the population of the US.

Your ignorance is astounding.

The Superbowl is the most viewed event GLOBALLY. Not just in America.

I'm East Indian too, but Cricket has no commercial appeal globally. You might think that way, but it doesn't. Not remotely.

Why would I need to prove it?

Are you inept? Do you know how to use Google? This information is available EVERYWHERE. Go find it. The onus is on the accuser to prove whats right and wrong, not for me to verify your own biases.

Actually, they run about 3 hours. Which is exactly how long it takes our local high schools to play a game as well, with no corporate interference at all. The networks have just, in this crazy plan to turn a profit, decided to run ads while the teams are strategizing and moving into position for the next series. Makes sense to me.

Doesn't the game have 4 15min quarters? Or am I wrong?. It's way too long for the length of actual game time. Our Australian Rules telecasts last less than 3 hours and at least 2 hours of that is actual playing time. And we have an ad after every goal - there can be 50+ in a high scoring match. The ads fit in with the flow of play, they don't extend the length of play to fit in more ads.
